Villandry Wining & Dining

I do love a good food and wine pairing event. So much so that I decided to push back my July drinking ban by one day just so I could attend this special Zomato meet up over at Villandry Grand Cafe, St James.

Joining me were are few other foodie and lifestyle bloggers – Frankie, Emma and Suzie.  So as always its an absolute pleasure to be dining with people who share a passion for the finer things in life; great food of course!

Held in their private dining room upstairs, we started off the evening with a crisp glass of bubbles. I of course just had to prove a point by having a glass of water first. Not even sure why I bothered, as moments later in hand was a glass of champagne. As if I going to say no to that.

Our bubbly and wonderful host for the evening, Monique gave us a short briefing before the Amuse Bouche of duck confit was brought out and as you can imagine, with a room full of food enthusiasts, we were all pretty eager to find out just what the other courses were going to be like.

I wouldn’t call myself a wine connoisseur by any means however I do appreciate a drop of the grape especially since I come from a country that produces some of the best of its kind in the world. Sorry being a little biased here…. Im talking about New Zealand 🙂 Give me a Giesen or Montana any day of the week.

We were introduced to the head chef Eddie Perez, who was a damn nice chap and gave us a quick run down of each dish as they were bought to the table. Its so refreshing when you see chefs that are completely passionate about what they do, you can just see it in their faces and believe me, this very much reflects on the standard of cooking, giving a result of A-class food.

There were 6 courses in total. In order we had –

Spiced Squid paired with a Gruner Veltliner Loimer 2013

Gazpacho of heritage tomotoes with a Mozanilla Sherry

Pea and ricotta risotto with scallops paired with Louise Moreau Chablis

Lamb rump, summer veggies with a Frappato

Sea Trout with red peppers and paired with a Sybille Kuntz Riesling

and lastly the Panna Cotta, berries with a dessert number – Moscato d’Asti 2014

The stand out for me in particular was the lamb. I am mega fuss pot when it comes to red meat (basically from being super spoilt while living down under) so for me to pick this dish as a favourite definitely means it was more than satisfying for my ridiculously high standards.

For the wine, I would generally go for the likes of a Sauvignon Blanc if we are talking whites here, however going forward, I’ll make an exception after tasting the Riesling. Tickled my fancy did it what?! Seconds please!

Before I almost forget – the palate cleanser or Trou Normande was ace.  Normally a french tradition containing Calvados is served between courses to settle the stomach and neutralise the palate. One this occasion we were treated to a pink sorbet and some more bubbles. If im not mistaken I would easily have said that this was very similar to that of a strawberry daiquiri…..Cocktails on the brain AGAIN….

Really really enjoyable evening and im so glad that I didn’t miss out in the end. Superbly done from both the guys at Zomato and the team at Villandry plus the valuable company from all around the table to the random humorous conversations. Quality!
